Twitter Trending Topics Are Driven by News Outlets, Not Individuals

A new study finds that trending topics don't come from celebrities or other influences, they come mainly from established news organizations. The report further states that these trending topics are not influenced by the number of followers a user has or how popular their tweets are; instead, popular news outlets take top honors, influencing 72 percent of trending topics. Find out more, including how these stats were found after the break.

Researchers analyzed over 16 million tweets, and also found that trending topics can change . . . fast. The longest that a topic will stay high on the list is about 40 minutes. And while user tweets containing certain hashtags can elevate a topic to trending status, more users are viewing tweets from the source (i.e., the news outlets) instead of using them as commentary for others.

As someone who gets paid to write words for an established organization, I think these findings are quite positive. But beyond my personal interest in well-written and researched content, it also makes a statement about how Twitter users are consuming news. By choosing to work within Twitter's massive reach, news organizations are able to quickly spread their message — and it's working. Also interesting: the fact that users are naturally drawn to the source of the news rather than what others are saying about it.

Four New Classic Batman Mimobots

Generally, Mimobots are adorable, often timely USB drives, but I'm a little unsure about the latest limited-edition release. Four classic DC Comics Batman-themed designs feature Batman, Robin, Catwoman, and the Joker (seriously, how freaky does the Joker look?).

The classic designs were created to mimic the characters' original appearances in the comic series. Drives are available in two, four, eight, or 16GB options, ranging from $20 to $60. And comic fans, look out for more character-inspired lines coming later this year: characters from Green Lantern, Superman, and The Flash will arrive soon.

Will 3G Access Come Standard in Future MacBook Airs?

Looks like Apple's MacBook Air may join the ranks of other ultra-portable laptops that come straight outta the box with the ability to access 3G signals from a wireless provider. A new survey has been sent to current MacBook Air owners that gauges interest in 3G connections and asks about data usage and storage. If the MacBook Air does end up getting 3G access, it could compete with Apple's already-popular (and celebrity-endorsed) iPad 3G. Why get a tablet when you can get a full-fledged computer?

There have been lots of rumors floating around about big-time changes coming to Apple's iPhone line (including an iPhone Nano and a totally revamped iPhone 5, to be exact), so the MacBook Air could just be one of many adjustments we see Apple making to its popular products.

Underneath the ice, spikes meet spikes as an Alaska king crab the size of a nickel crawls over a knobby sea star. After a dozen years, the crustacean will grow to the size of a tractor tire.

The Elephant Festival is one of the most popular festivals in Jaipur and takes place at the famous Chaugan Stadium in March. It begins with a beautiful procession of bedecked elephants, camels, horses, and folk dancers. The mahouts proudly embellish their elephants with vibrant colors, jhools (saddle cloth), and heavy jewelry.

This buffalo was cooling down in a puddle of muddy water. This image I captured was on one of the Komodo Islands in Indonesia. Only three islands in Komodo have the Komodo dragons. I gave this image the title “Buffalo's Last Moments” because this buffalo is unfortunately on the menu of the vicious Komodo dragon. I was using the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens. For this image I captured it at f/4 and focused on the eyes.

Hiking’s biggest reward is seeing views like this after a steep climb. Stone Mountain in North Carolina, USA, has some incredible contrasting terrain between the green pine trees and large, slick faces of white granite. Nature has provided opportunities for those trees to grow out of the cracks in the rock.

Photographer: John Peltier (Clayton, North Carolina, USA)
John’s interest in photography started at the age of 17 during a photography class in his home town in Lake Tahoe, where there are unbelievable photographic opportunities. Photography has been more or less just a hobby for John for over ten years, until 2009 when he started to take it more seriously. He has gone from just taking pictures, to focusing more on composition and technical aspects. John’s favorite photographic subjects are landscapes, including hard-to-reach places with interesting and unknown stories, and has lately been trying to fuse history with his landscape photos. He has carried photographic equipment through jungles, deserts, and mountains just to be able to share these places with people who otherwise wouldn’t see them.

The last years he has focused more on photography because it feels more right for him. he sees himself as Jack of all trades, master of none. He likes to take pictures of everything from settling landscapes and contemporary fashion. He is a “self taught” in the aspect that he hasn’t attended any photo schools nor had any mentors. The internet and the everlasting contributers have taught him all he knows about photography. He hopes someday he can make a living of capturing the light.

Photo of the Day | February 11 | Wolf Rock by John Peltier

Photo of the Day - February 11

Hiking’s biggest reward is seeing views like this after a steep climb. Stone Mountain in North Carolina, USA, has some incredible contrasting terrain between the green pine trees and large, slick faces of white granite. Nature has provided opportunities for those trees to grow out of the cracks in the rock.
Technical Info: Canon 5D MkII, EF 17-40mm. 20mm, 1/15 @ f/22, ISO100.

Photo of the Day | February 14 | Night at the Museum by Tor Ivan Boine

Photo of the Day - February 14

Night photography with natural light is something I like to do. With the full moon and the temperature was relative bareable at -15c I captured this building which is at the sami museum. Almost completely lit by the moon and the clouds started to fly in.
Technical Info: Nikon D90, 119sec at f/8, ISO200, focal length 27mm

Title of the photograph: Night at the Museum
Photographer: Tor Ivan Boine (Karasjok, Norway)
Tor Ivan Boine has always been fond of creating things. Mostly in welding metal in different shapes, making clay models in 3d on PC or draw the old fashion way.
