Photo of the Day - February 08

An old cycle-rickshaw wala, waits for his next customer, whom he can transport in the city of Haridwar, and get his next meal of the day. The life of many rickshaw wallas are so much short term planning. They just do not worry about anything else other than their next meal

Photo of the Day - February 12

Purple flowers in the flower show at Lalbagh, Bangalore, India was a treat to watch. It made a good subject where I could use the DOF pretty effectively. The spot metering added to the effect. The bi-annual flower show attracts hundreds of people from the city, and umpteen varieties of flowers displayed in exquisite revelry
Technical Info: Nikon D7000, 1/1600sec, f/2.5, ISO160, -0.7ev, focal length 50mm, Spot metering

Photo of the Day | February 11 | Wolf Rock by John Peltier

Photo of the Day - February 11

Hiking’s biggest reward is seeing views like this after a steep climb. Stone Mountain in North Carolina, USA, has some incredible contrasting terrain between the green pine trees and large, slick faces of white granite. Nature has provided opportunities for those trees to grow out of the cracks in the rock.
Technical Info: Canon 5D MkII, EF 17-40mm. 20mm, 1/15 @ f/22, ISO100.
Title of the photograph: Wolf Rock
Photographer: John Peltier (Clayton, North Carolina, USA)
John’s interest in photography started at the age of 17 during a photography class in his home town in Lake Tahoe, where there are unbelievable photographic opportunities. Photography has been more or less just a hobby for John for over ten years, until 2009 when he started to take it more seriously. He has gone from just taking pictures, to focusing more on composition and technical aspects. John’s favorite photographic subjects are landscapes, including hard-to-reach places with interesting and unknown stories, and has lately been trying to fuse history with his landscape photos. He has carried photographic equipment through jungles, deserts, and mountains just to be able to share these places with people who otherwise wouldn’t see them.

Photo of the Day | February 15 | Disappearing Lighthouse by Nuno Alexandre

Photo of the Day - February 15

The coastline is disappearing a few meters each year, and what started with a small collection of houses and a lighthouse, only the lighthouse remains today, the rest of the constructions were either eaten by the sea, or demolished to keep the area safe for visitors. It is estimated that the lighthouse will fall into the sea, within the next 10 years, maybe less.

World Press Photo awards 2011 – in pictures

World Press Photo of the Year
Jodi Bieber, a South African photographer for Time magazine, won with this picture of Bibi Aisha, an 18-year-old woman from Oruzgan province in Afghanistan. Aisha's story began when she fled back to her family after complaining of violent treatment from her husband. The Taliban arrived one night demanding that she face justice and Aisha's brother-in-law held her down while her husband sliced off her ears and then cut off her nose. Aisha was abandoned, but later rescued by aid workers and the US military. After time in a women's refuge in Kabul, she was taken to the US, where she now lives. Jury chair David Burnett said about the photo: 'This could become one of those pictures – and we have maybe just 10 in our lifetime – where if somebody says "you know, that picture of a girl" you know exactly which one they're talking about' Photograph: Jodi Bieber
